Walking route

The "In het Spoor van de Mammoet" (In the Footsteps of the Mammoth) hiking trail is a fascinating 5.5-kilometer walk located in the Odoorn-Exloo and Buinerveld forests on the Hondsrug. This route takes you through a rich and diverse landscape full of natural and historical sights. The Dutch Forestry Commission (Staatsbosbeheer) is responsible for the clearing and maintenance of this and other trails in the area.

The pingo ruins in the area between Ees, Buinen, and Exloo are remarkable natural phenomena. They were formed during the last ice age by the growth of ice lenses in the frozen subsurface, creating these striking landscapes. These pingo ruins are characteristic of the region's geological and climatic history.

Another remarkable part of the route is the Stormbos. This forest, located in section 165 in the Exloo woods, was created after the infamous November storm of 1972. Staatsbosbeheer (the Dutch Forestry Commission) decided not to clean up the storm damage in this part of the forest, resulting in a unique natural landscape. Fallen trees have continued to grow and created a wilderness feel, making the forest home to a remarkable diversity of flora and fauna.

The Princess Beatrix Oak is another notable landmark along the route. This tree was planted in 1938 to commemorate the birth of Princess (later Queen) Beatrix. It is also the first tree to be systematically planted in this forest, giving it a historically significant place in the area.

The route itself is marked with white square signs featuring a white arrow and a mammoth, making navigation easier. The walk takes you along ancient cart tracks, past glacial potholes and dolmens, through beautiful forests, vast heathlands, and idyllic fens. Although the route is not paved throughout, it offers a varied and fascinating walking experience.
