The large, silent heath
Dwingelderveld National Park is best known for its vast, tranquil heathland. The central part of the park is even the largest contiguous wet heathland remaining in Western Europe.
During this varied and child-friendly walk, you have a chance of encountering digger wasps, the Ruinen flock of sheep, birds, insects, and various butterflies, such as the rare Alcon Blue.
During the summer months, several Drenthe heath sheep graze here. This sheep breed, with its characteristic curled horns and long tail, was herded in enormous flocks on the heath until around 1900.
