History comes alive!
Coevorden's history comes to life in the Drenthe's Veste Museum. Here, in the former arsenal at the city harbor, authentic objects from various eras tell the stories of the past. These include the helmet of Rabenhaupt, Coevorden's leader in the battle against the militant Bishop of Münster, Bommen Berend (1672), or the text with the original signature of Mijndert van der Thijnen, the brave schoolmaster who initiated the resistance against Bommen Berend. Various exhibitions, enhanced by period uniforms, traditional costumes, weapons and utensils, drawings, maps, and paintings, take you back in time.
The museum also features an exact model of the fortified town in the early 19th century. It's truly the centerpiece of the collection. Nothing is missing: every house, the churches, the ramparts, the castle, the gates, locks, bastions, and so on.
